Note: Muneuji's novel doesn't include any major spoilers regarding main story but it does explain why he frequently wears a space helmet, what his relation to it is, and why he wants to become an astronaut. I also highly recommend that you read Ushio's novel before this!!

“Father, do you think it’ll go well today?”

When I was a child, I thought that no there was no end to that grassy field.

That place—where my father took me to visit time after time.

“I wonder… I'll keep on going until I get a result, no matter what it may be.”

Setting up the radio, radar, and small parabolic antenna, my father abruptly muttered to himself.

With a hint of resignation, he said, “Success this time will be difficult too.”

Even I, as a child, had noticed this, and so I stopped calling out to him any more.

Following my father's instructions, I held the telescope with both of my hands, as it was a bit bigger than usual.
Considering an elementary school student’s strength, it was difficult for me to keep the telescope in place, which made my father eventually extend one arm out and return the telescope to its upright position.

I giggled, and my father also grinned behind that serious expression of his.

“I wonder what an alien looks like.”

I asked a casual question.
Then, my father decided to change his usual stiff and strained expression into a somewhat relaxed expression and—

“The alien that I saw looked something like a firefly squid.”

He replied.

My father was someone who saw “space” in his dreams.
He was someone who was adamant that he'd one day become an astronaut and go to space, and he would take me, someone who was still a small child, to a deserted grassy field in the dead of night to try to make contact with extraterrestrial life.

But unfortunately, none of those dreams came close to success.

Which is why this time too.
I thought it would be the same this time too, however…

“Huh?”

A sudden, bright light.

An impact.

The sound of my father gasping.

The communication equipment floating up in the air, rattling and shaking nonstop.

“Father—”

There was no response.

My father… was floating in the air.

I reached out my hand.
My arms were still so short that I wasn't even able to grab the hem of his pants.

My father was moving farther away.

During that time, I wondered if my father was smiling.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

“Kagu….ya…”

“Ah…”

In the classroom after class ended. Kinugawa quietly examined my face, looking a little worried.

It seemed like I was in a daze when I was recalling what happened ten years ago.
To the point that I wasn't even able to realize that someone was standing in front of me.

I look at the clock through the shield of my space helmet.
It was almost time to go pick Hime up from kindergarten.

“Apologies, I had to make you go through the trouble of waiting for me. Let's go.”

“It's, alright… let's, hurry…up a bit.”

I nodded and left my seat.
Kinugawa, perhaps relieved once he saw my appearance, nodded in the same way and followed me.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

“Kaguya, your little sister… is honest, and cute…”

“Indeed, it's almost enough for me to take the initiative and welcome it into my eyes.”

“That's a little… scary.”

“Your little sister, on the other hand, is full of energy and is a cute and mature kid, Kinugawa.”

“Really…? Tha…nks.”

After joining the Community Revitalization Club and meeting Kinugawa there, we started to frequently pick our little sisters up together.
Since both of our little sisters attend the same kindergarten and the time period to pick them up and the road to bring them home were almost all the same, our relationship naturally progressed.

“Are you… going back to the dorm… once you're done… picking your little sister up, today?”

“Yes. Uu-chan told me that he'd bake some sweets for my little sister.”

“Kurama also likes, your little sister, right? I heard that… He also calles her… ‘Hime’.”

“Yes. Before I knew it, the nickname that I gave to my little sister somehow managed to influence Uu-chan to also use it.

“I guess, he… adores her.”

“Certainly. Also…”

“Hm…?”

“I heard from Uu-chan that he also prepared some sweets for your little sister, Kinugawa.”

“Eh…”

“If it's alright with you, let's go to HAMA House together.”

“...Thank, you. I have to, give Kurama, my thanks too…”

Kinugawa delightfully smiles in a heartwarming manner.

Now, it's about time we go to Hime’s kindergarten.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

During summer vacation, when I was in my first year of elementary school, my father disappeared.

My father would always tell me about things like how he genuinely loves space, how he aims to be an astronaut, and how there are other living creatures in space besides humans whenever I talked to him.

However, he got abducted by a UFO right before my eyes.

“I'm telling the truth…! Father really did get abducted by a UFO! It happened right before my eyes!”

“But Muneuji-kun, didn't you lose your consciousness? How did you see a UFO?”

“That's… I wasn't able to see it properly, but… but I really…!”

“Aren't you just confused by the shock of losing your father?”

“Children sometimes say things that sound like dreams after all…”

I desperately pleaded. That my father had been absorbed into the light.

However, not even one of the adults there believed my words.

There was a time when my mother told me a story while I was in a state of shock and depression.

“...The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter?”

“That’s right. Since our last name is Kaguya, Papa might have returned to the moon, just like Princess Kaguya.”

But of course, even my mother doesn't actually believe in that sort of story.
She was only doing it to cheer me up.

There was a time when I woke up in the middle of the night to take care of something when I heard my mother and grandmother discussing something.

“Just forget about that man already. He probably left you for another woman…”

“But, I still…”

“More importantly, you should prioritize taking care of Muneuji's mental health. You're his mother. Get your act together.”

“...”

My mother was also having a hard time. It was only naturally so.
Which is why I decided to no longer talk about my father publicly.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The person who comforted me during that time was Uu-chan.

“Muu-chan, have this!”

“This is… chocolate?”

“Yep, it's the very first one that I made. I wanted to give them to you first, Muu-chan.”

“Thank you…”

“I’m not saying this to cheer you up, but…”

Because of Uu-chan looking at me straight in the eyes…

“No matter what happens, I'll believe in you, Muu-chan.”

My decision became certain.
I'll find the evidence of my father being taken and the whereabouts of my father.
If my mother gets worried once she knows about it, then I'll do it in secret. However, I'll definitely do it, no matter what.

—End of Track 1

----------------------------------------------------------------------
lumidescence: A screenshot of Chihiro's model blushing (blushing chihiro)
Uu-chan also had an accident that made him lose his family. He must've gone through a lot of hardships.
But even so, Uu-chan still cared for me, who was in a similar situation, and stayed by my side every day.

“Hey Muu-chan, let's go home together today. Why don't you stay at my house until dinner time?”

“I've been intruding on your house yesterday and the day before that. Isn't that a bother to you?

“There's nobody else except Mama-Robot in my house, so in any case, it's fine.”

“If I recall correctly, today's the day that the Weekly Shounen Dive goes on sale.”

“I can still read it even if you’re there, Muu-chan. And you don't bother to pry into my things.”

Uu-chan may not always be straightforward, but deep down, he’s a really kind and nice guy.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

That's why I also… told Uu-chan about everything.

About what I saw. About what I'll be planning to do from this point onward.
The things that no adults would believe and probably none of my classmates in the same year as me would believe if I were to tell them, either. The truth that not a single person would believe… All of it.

“...And that's why I presume that the extremely glaring light was emitted by a UFO during the abduction.

“Mhm.”

“In the past, there have also been cases of UFO sightings in several countries. In some countries, it was reported that livestock were found dead with some parts of their bodies cut off after a UFO left. However, my father was simply gone. This means that there’s a high chance that he's still alive.”

“Mhm, mhm.”

“You're not going to laugh?”

“That’s because there's no way for you to lie, Muu-chan. I believe you.”

I was happy.
That in this world, there's still one person who believes in my words.

“My father has been abducted. Which is why… I want to get him back.”

“Obviously you will.”

“Uu-chan, will you help me?”

“Sure.”

I was happy.
That Uu-chan nodded way more easily than I had imagined.

“So, what are we going to do? Do you have a plan?”

“It's a primitive method. If we reenact the moment when my father was abducted, we might be able to have the UFO appear in the exact same way as it did that day.”

“That's something that's worth a shot.”

“However, all of the equipment that we were using was taken away with my father. That leaves me no choice but to prepare everything on my own.”

“Uwah~ That's sounds like a hassle~”

Uu-chan exaggeratedly shrugged his shoulders and laughed; however, it was by no means to make fun of me.

And then—

“Got it. Let me know if there's anything that I can do.”

He genuinely… said that as if it were natural to do so.

Uu-chan is truly… the kindest person there is.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

It took a considerable amount of time to prepare for recreating what happened on that day.

There was no way for me to buy high-quality communication equipment with my elementary school allowance, and I only had a vague memory of what my father had used; therefore, it took me several years to gather things that were somewhat similar to them.

It also took me a few more years to master using radio technology, which was my father's specialty.

By the time I had finally prepared everything, me and Uu-chan had turned 12 years old.

However, it was all thanks to Uu-chan’s help that I was able to properly make it in time.

I thought to myself as I looked up at the pitch-black sky from the window of my room.

Tomorrow will be the sixth year since my father disappeared that night. I absolutely don't want to fail. I must succeed. At all costs.

And while I was carefully inspecting the communication equipment—

“Muneuji, you're still awake, aren't you? Come downstairs at once! There's something that I want to talk to you about tomorrow!”

I heard my mother's voice.

“...”

I didn't… want to go.
Which is why I subconsciously pretended not to hear her words.
I told myself that the work that I have to do tomorrow is much more important than anything else.
I was thinking as if I was in a rebellious phase.

However, my mother came upstairs once she noticed that I didn't respond.

“Hey, I'm calling for you. Come downstairs quickly.”

“...Okay.”

Once my mother and I went downstairs and to the living room, we were greeted by the eloquent voice of a man.

“Well, that can't be helped. Muneuji-kun is at that age after all, so there'll also be times when he wants to spend time alone. Right?

“...”

“But, Muneuji won't even listen one bit to me about the trip that we'll go on tomorrow.”

“...”

“Hmm, is that so?”

That man scratched his head as if he’d been troubled, then turned in my direction and spoke to me, carefully choosing the right words to say.

“I'm sorry for calling you to come here.”

I'm…

“Are you perhaps not wanting to go, Muneuji-kun?”

I'm…

“Since it's summer vacation, I'm sure that it'll be fun if we all go on a trip together…”

I'm—

“I'm not going.”

“Hey, wait! Muneuji!”

“Ah… Okay, I see…”

“I have something extremely important to take care of tomorrow. Now, please excuse me.”

That very night, I… took all of the communication equipment with me and left home.
Without telling my mother or the man that was beside her, who was smiling with his eyebrows lowered, where I was going.

—End of Track 2

----------------------------------------------------------------------
lumidescence: A screenshot of Chihiro's model blushing (blushing chihiro)
“So, you finished gathering the communication equipment, brought them all with you, and came to my house? It's like you're running away from home. Pretty cool, Muu-chan.”

“I’m honored.”

The destination was, without a doubt, Uu-chan's house. I had no other place to go after all.
When I suddenly arrived at his house at night, Uu-chan welcomed me with great hospitality. He even went so far as to serve me some chocolate cake that he made.

“In any case, this thing was something that I thought we should eat together before we do the plan tomorrow...”

“I really can't thank you enough, Uu-chan.”

Behind Uu-chan's back, who was acting a little embarrassed that he turned his head away from me, was Mama-Robot folding the laundry.

Although it's an old model, I quite liked this robot. It has a dull matte gold color and shows some signs of use, however, that's also part of my taste.

Uu-chan would often make untruthful remarks such as ‘It doesn't talk and it's weird’, however, I could see that Mama-Robot is cleanly polished all the time.

As if waiting for the moment that Mama-Robot leaves the room after folding the laundry, Uu-chan tilts his head and quietly examines my face.

“Aren’t you… going to get scolded tomorrow?”

“I’m prepared if that does happen.”

“Well, if that's the case, you should just relax as you see fit. You're free to stay at my house as much as you like, and you're free to talk about anything you like. I'll do whatever you ask me to do, Muu-chan.”

“I've made a good friend. I'm grateful from the bottom of my heart.”

“If you compare this to when you stayed by my side, then this is nothing…”

Uu-chan mutters up to that point, then bashfully closes his mouth shut for the rest.

“Well, whatever, I'm going to bed to prepare for tomorrow.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------

…After all that happened.

“Zzz… *snore*,  *snore*...”

Uu-chan quickly fell asleep after preparing a futon for me with Mama-Robot.

I, on the other hand, wasn't able to sleep at all. All I could do was be reminded about tomorrow and my father's face.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

My father had an aspiration for space, but unlike other people who also aspire to go to space, he did not belong to any national research institution. He was conducting research about space completely on his own.

Naturally, it would have been easier to conduct research if he had worked in a public institution. However, when I asked him why he chose to do that, I received the following answer:

“It seemed like a hassle.”

“...Is that so?”

It was nothing significant. My father just simply wanted to ‘conduct research the way he likes’.
He thought that he wouldn't be able to do the research that he wanted if there were numerous restrictions and rules.
He was the type of person who wanted to make his dream of becoming an astronaut come true in his own way without relying on the help of the country.

“To tell you the truth, your father once had an encounter with an alien… Ever since then, I've been unable to get the three numbers—that somehow appeared—out of my head.”

“Numbers?”

“Let's continue to do research about these numbers.”

I respected my father, who was like that, and also agreed with his methods.

“Hey, dear… why do you wear a helmet everyday?”

“It's for a test run. I made this together with Muneuji.”

“Just why did I marry such a strange person… But, for some reason, it's still making me love him…”

“Let’s give the helmet that's slightly improved to Muneuji.”

My father and mother were both strange people who would even question their own marriage.

“Kaguya-san and her husband are so beautiful, it's so rare for that to happen.”
“Her husband seems popular with the other ladies. But I heard that most of them usually run away because of his weirdness.”

“Hello, ladies in the neighborhood.”
“Oh, if it isn't the rumored husband of Kaguya-san and Muneuji-kun! Hello~ Are you two out for a walk?”

“Chandrasekhar limit.”

“Wh, what? What did you say?

“Apologies, I was thinking about something… Tolman–Oppenheimer–Volkoff limit.”

“Father, let's leave it at that. The ladies are backing up right now.”

“Ah, ahaha… then, we'll go this way…”

“Gamma-ray burst.”

…My father was known for having a unique sensibility that made the wives in the neighborhood keep a distance from him.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

However, my father really cherished me and took good care of me.
I think that he also loved my mother with all his heart.

Which is why—as my grandmother had said, as the adults around me had said—there was no way for me to overlook their assumption that my father ‘left for another woman’.
My father is being shamefully ‘misunderstood’ by everyone.

“Father…”

Tomorrow, I'll absolutely make contact with the aliens and—clear up the misunderstandings about my father.

lumidescence: A screenshot of Chihiro's model blushing (blushing chihiro)
The grassy field was just as quiet as it had been that day.
The stars that look like they're about to rain down on us are emitting light everywhere, telling us that ‘they're here’ in the sky.

*Pant*... Haa… I'm so tired… This communication equipment… is way too heavy, though…!?”

“That's why I told you to let me carry half of it.”

“Haa, haa, I already told you it's fine… At least let me do this.”

I thought of telling him that he shouldn't hide it if he wanted to complain, but when I saw Uu-chan covered in sweat and smiling, those words of mine started to wither away.

We set up the equipment that Uu-chan brought in order.

“You’re very skilled. As expected of Muu-chan.”

“Of course.”

“If I recall correctly, the plan goes like this: you're going to communicate with the aliens and make it known that UFOs do exist in this world. Then, you'll clear up the misunderstanding about your father.”

“Correct.”

“A misunderstanding, huh. You said that they started to assume that your father had an affair and ran away, right?”
Uu-chan's tone had a somewhat harsh implication. I slightly nodded my head in response.

“Your dad was indeed a strange person, but he definitely didn't have an affair. I guess adults just don't understand that kind of thing.”

“Yes, indeed.”

“...Do you think that your mother also had an affair, Muu-chan?”

“Even if you say that as a joke, I honestly don't know. However, I do know how she would find it pointless to endlessly wait for someone who’s already gone and would just move on.”

My mother, who loved my father, also cried about him for some time, but it eventually seemed like she decided to move on.
She said, “I’m prioritizing my child’s happiness first because I'm a mother,” and got remarried.

My stepfather’s personality was the complete opposite of my father's.

He’s eloquent, bright, and sociable. He hasn't talked about space, and he hasn't even thought of making a helmet as a present.
He hasn't even invited me to go to the grassy field to try to communicate with a UFO during summer vacation.

He's the type of person who plans a trip to a summer resort with his family months in advance.
He's someone who's doing their best to take care of my mother and me, someone who still doesn't like him.

That’s clearly being conveyed. However—

“...I really hate adults.”

Uu-chan muttered in a bored tone, but then suddenly realized something and immediately apologized to me.

“I’m sorry, Muu-chan. I didn't mean to include your mother in that.”

“It's alright, Uu-chan. I know that you’ve gone through a tough time due to reasons related to adults.”

The set up has been completed. It's almost time.
I dug up my memories of that day. Following what my father had tried, I first sent a morse code. Following that is a pulse that I had no clue how far it'd reach. Then, a radar that detects electrical reactions in the air.

Then, a radio telescope. A loud shout. A wish. A prayer.

However…

“...”

“... Nothing’s… happening.”

“Yeah.”

It didn't happen like it did that day.

All that happened was just the stars shining brightly, looking down at us who were standing there, dumbfounded.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

“Why did you sneak out of the house in the middle of the night and then come back home the next night!? I was really worried for you!”

What waited for me and Uu-chan, who both returned home in disappointment, was a scolding from my stepfather.
My stepfather’s a gentle person, and he hasn't even once raised his voice before, but it seems he could not overlook the fact that his stepson ran away from home after all.

“I apologize for my selfishness. I'm very sorry.”
When I bowed my head to apologize, my stepfather instantly looked like he was about to tear up.

“It’s fine… I'm just… relieved that you came home and nothing bad happened to you… Honestly…”

“I'm really sorry. How's mother doing?”

“She's resting in her bedroom. She… seemed to be in a bit of a shock.”

“I'll apologize to my mother right away… It'll be bad if I cause any harm to the baby in her stomach.”

“What?”

Uu-chan, who was also bowing his head because he got scolded along with me, lifted his head as if he had been repulsed.

“By baby, you mean… the one with your stepfather's?”

My stepfather silently nodded.

Uu-chan takes a deep breath, looks at the side of my face, then moves his head down again.

“I really hate adults. I'll be on Muu-chan's side no matter what.”

I couldn't see Uu-chan's expression, however… I can hear that his voice might have been shaking a little.
I repeat those words and that tone of voice in my head over and over again. I'm sure that from now on, I'll continue to do so.
Uu-chan.
Because you were by my side, I was able to have things that I didn't have to let go of.

“I'll take Ushio back to his house. Please comfort your mother, Muneuji-kun.”
With those words from my stepfather, the long night seemed to finally come to an end.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I entered my mother’s bedroom.

Noticing my presence, my mother quickly stood up.
Her hair and her face were all a mess.

I ran up to my mother. I then hugged her so as not to hurt her from the impact.

“Mother, I'm really sorry…! I didn't mean to make you sad…!”

“I'm sorry too. I'm sorry for pretending to not see how you feel, Muneuji.”

My mother gently hugs me.

“You've been waiting for that person and have been wanting to protect that place for him, haven't you?”

“...Yes.”

My mother didn't blame me for anything, as she understood how I felt.

“The helmet that… he made for you.”

“Huh?”

“It was completed a long time ago… before that person disappeared. But… I had to forget about him. You and I had to move on… so I hid it and left it there.”

“...”

My mother then slowly stroked my head and spoke in a lovely tone.

“I returned it on top of your study desk earlier, Muneuji.”

“…!”

lumidescence: A screenshot of Chihiro's model blushing (blushing chihiro)
I rush into my room.
Sure enough, there was indeed a helmet on top of the desk.
I gently pick it up, illuminated by the light of the already-setting moon.

It has already been six years since my father disappeared, and even though it was built earlier than that, the helmet hasn't shown any signs of deterioration in the slightest.

My mother must have carefully stored this… Just like you would handle a treasured item.

“...”

This must be a sentiment from my mother.
That if I believe my father, that if I can still say that he had been abducted, then she'll surely allow me to go to space to get him back—that’s what I think she's trying to convey.

“Yeah, I'm sure of it.”

I want my mother to be at ease and continue on the path that she believes in.
I'll be who I am, and I will continue to follow the path that I myself have chosen.

I put on the helmet and tried to look around my surroundings through the shield.
It fits just right, as if I've been wearing it for a long time. My vision was clear, and I’m able to breathe naturally, as if it had been a part of my body from the beginning.

My stepfather is a good person.
I can see why my mother chose him. I'm sure he'll be a wonderful father.
I'm sure he'll be able to make my mother happy.

However, the father in my eyes will only be that person.

He was a strange person who really loved space, but for some reason, you can't help but still love him. Only that person will be my father.

“...”

About my newborn little sister.
I was quite shocked when I found out that my mother was pregnant, but now I feel very blessed that I'm able to have a little sister.

I get to have a sibling.
Which is why, I'll also properly take that first step towards the new chapter.
Once my little sister is born, I want to pamper her with lots of things and do all kinds of things to make her happy.

And—

Starting tomorrow, I'll wear this space helmet that my father gave me every day.
Going to space requires training. As part of that…
As it is the expression of my determination above anything else…

“Wait for me, father.”

I will definitely… become an astronaut.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Uu-chan greeted me, Kinugawa, and our little sisters when we arrived at the living room of HAMA House.

He then gave us strawberry chocolate donuts as promised.
He seemed to be busy reading the thin book of someone he calls ‘Sensei’, so he quickly went back to our room without even saying goodbye.

“I wove Ushio-kun’s sweets! They're always so yummy!”

“Did Ushio-kun make these himself? If he did, I'm gonna become Ushio-kun’s wife!”

“No, you… can't... I absolutely… won't let you…”

Seeing Kinugawa shaking his head with a deep wrinkle forming between his eyebrows, our little sisters laughed.
“Kinugawa’s doting nature is quite impressive,” I commented with a laugh, making Kinugawa embarrassed.

After that, we gave our little sisters warm milk tea to drink after wiping their sticky mouths from eating the donuts.
I then listen to the cheerful chatter that our little sisters are having.

—A peaceful scenery.

“...”

Since the day that I decided to carry on my father's will and find him at all costs… several years have passed.
I still haven't successfully contacted someone or something in space, even to this day. There was even no new information about UFOs.

“To get my father back and get my life back on track.”

That is my long-cherished wish.

By joining the Community Revitalization Club, I have been able to focus on other things to a certain extent, however—
I feel that my time has stopped since the day my father disappeared on that grassy field.

That's why sometimes I think of something when I see a peaceful and cheerful scene unfolding right before my eyes.

If I get my father back, what happens after that…?

“...No.”

I should stop thinking about that now. I haven't even found where my father is yet.
If I keep on doing that, I'll surely waste time discovering anything in the future.
I should still have time to think about it…

“Do you like me, big brother?”

“Yes.”

“Am I cute?”

“Absolutely. You're my adorable little sister that I would want to go as far as to swallow you up whole.”

“...Your love… is scary…”

After that, Kinugawa sent his little sister home and went back to their house first. His little sister left a handwritten note for Uu-chan saying, “Thank you Ushio-kun”.

I, on the other hand, was trying to pass the time by waiting in the dorms until the archery class that my mother was teaching ended.

“Hey big brother, read me a picture book before mom’s done!”

I grant Hime’s request.

“Alright. Now, which book should I read for you today…”

“I want the one with Princess Kaguya!”

“Understood.”

After a short while, I started to read Hime's favorite picture book. That is, until…

“Oh~♪ If it isn't Princess Kaguya!”

Yowa-san appears while holding a bag with ‘Cafe369’ printed on it, like some kind of code.

“I had also read that story! The contents of it are to my liking, and it is profoundly memorable. It makes me think of a man that I met on a star juuust some time ago. He's also a descendant of Princess Kaguya, or so he claimed.”

“What?”

A flashing light filled my brain.
Questions started to swirl around in circles in my head, occupying everything inside it.

“A descendant of Princess Kaguya…?”

“Indeed, Indeed♪”

And then—Yowa-san’s smile made me feel like the pieces were starting to fall into place.

“He’s a traitor of the moon.”

I froze. I couldn't even seem to move my gaze away for a while.
